Our purpose

A wider world of stories.

“Mukana” means opportunity in Shona. We founded the press to create meaningful opportunities for writers whose work is too often overlooked because of geography, access, or narrow expectations about the stories their communities should tell.

We publish fiction, poetry, anthologies, and language-learning work that lets readers encounter African lives in their fullness—joyful, difficult, ordinary, surprising, rooted, and global.

Our search reaches beyond established publishing centers. We are especially committed to African writers while welcoming compelling voices from other underrepresented regions around the world.

Our reach

Seventy-seven voices—and counting.

Mukana Press has represented 77 authors and poets across five books: 52 poets in Old Love Skin, 12 writers in The Newlyweds’ Window, 12 writers in Our Daughter, Who Art in America, and Munashe Kaseke as the author of Send Her Back and Other Stories. The forthcoming 100 Shona Words for Beginners is credited to Mukana Press.

These writers represent at least 30 countries. Because contributors across the anthologies may come from some of the same countries, we use “30+” rather than combining overlapping country totals.

Preserving a literary legacy

A future for important Zimbabwean books.

When Weaver Press in Zimbabwe closed, Mukana Press acquired selected titles from its catalog. We plan to relaunch some of these works in the future, helping preserve their place in Zimbabwe’s literary heritage and introducing them to new generations of readers.
